Newshub political editor Tova O’Brien woke up Monday to a slew of new overseas fans after her interview with former Botany MP and Advance NZ co-leader Jami-Lee Ross at Newshub Nation.
Preliminary election results show Advance NZ holding 0.9 percent of the party’s votes, and O’Brien began the interview Sunday morning by asking Ross if he had any regrets.
In his response, Ross did not acknowledge any regrets and when he finished O’Brien asked, “Do you want to have another chance to answer that because I just asked you if you have any regrets? You have just been part of a political movement that has been selling misinformation during the election campaign. “

Ross replied, “No. I think we were asking some tough questions about the direction of Covid-19. “He accepted that he regretted the last three years as a Botany MP.
On Thursday, Facebook removed Advance NZ’s page, saying it took the action due to repeated violation of Facebook’s policy against misinformation about Covid-19 that could lead to imminent physical harm.
The party’s co-leader, Billy Te Kahika, confirmed that the page had not been published in a statement Thursday, saying he was “horrified.” The Advance NZ campaign was the subject of a Circuit of things investigation.
In Sunday’s interview, O’Brien suggested to Ross, “You sold your soul out of political ambition.”
Ross replied: “I could see that there were people asking questions about things that I believe in too, about the freedom and sovereignty of New Zealand.”
O’Brien said Ross was “fostering fear and hysteria among vulnerable communities.”
“Not at all,” Ross said, and began to talk about the death rate from Covid-19 compared to other flu epidemics. O’Brien raised his hand and interrupted by saying, “I don’t want to hear any of that crap.”
“You can’t just give me that and not allow me to respond,” Ross said.
“Well, if you’re going to come on the show and say things that are factually wrong, I can do it,” O’Brien said.
Later in the interview, O’Brien asked Ross about the Botany constituency. “Why did you retire at Botany? … It almost seemed like a kind of narcissistic belief that you could win the seat that was obviously going to go to Christopher Luxon.”
“Just implementing all the terms, aren’t you Tova today?” Ross said, adding that if he had stayed in Botany he probably would have won enough of the party vote for the seat to go to Labor.
“You’re dreaming, buddy,” O’Brien said.
It seems the interview is being watched all over the world, with viewers such as British socialist writer Owen Jones.
“One of the wildest interviews you have ever seen. She doesn’t have any chills. It’s like watching someone’s anxiety dream, ”Owen tweeted.
