Rachel Brooking, a Dunedin woman, is one of the newest MPs on the Labor list.
Rachel Brooking is celebrating her birthday with a new career.
The Dunedin lawyer, who turned 45 on Sunday, came to Parliament as an MP from the Labor list thanks to the party’s strong election results.
At number 46 on the list, Brooking is now packing his bags and heading to Wellington, so any birthday celebration will have to wait.
Brooking said he has had a life-long interest in politics and was one of the people appointed by Cabinet to review the Resource Management Act.

She is interested in environmental law and hopes to help the government implement its policies, particularly those surrounding the environment.
It wasn’t until Sunday morning that Brooking knew for a fact that he had succeeded.
“Obviously last night was quite stressful. I went to bed thinking it was probably there, but I wasn’t really sure.
“It is an amazing birthday present.”

Brooking worked for 20 years as a local government and resource management attorney.
She is married to Dr. Chris Jackson, a cancer specialist and activist, and they have three children, ages 10, 12 and 15.
“They are very happy and excited for me.”
