Preliminary results for the 2020 elections:
National – 35 seats – 26.9%
Maori party – 1 seat – 1%

Former national leader Simon Bridges has called this evening “bleak,” saying National will need to do a “real soul-searching.”

The new electorate Takanini goes to Labor Neru Leavasa.
Simon O’Connor of National wins Auckland, Barbara Kuriger of Labor wins Taranaki-King Country.
Louise Upston of Labor wins Taupo, and Vanushi Walters of Labor wins Upper Harbor.
Nanaia Mahuta from Labor retains Hauraki-Waikato.
11:55 pm: Labor Deborah Russell seeks to retain New Lynn, with 99% of the votes counted.
Labor recovers New Plymouth from National after 12 years with Glen Bennett’s victory.
National’s Simeon Brown retains Pakuranga.
Tangi Utikere retains the Labor post at Palmerston North after the departure of Iain Lees-Galloway.
11:52 pm: Hehir says there are no permanent victories or defeats in the elections.
“We really expect a lot of them from this period,” Espiner says of Labor.
National’s Luxon wins Botany.
Carmel Sepuloni de Labor retains Kelston.
National’s Denise Lee retains Maungakiekie.
Ardern preserves Mount Albert.
Michael Wood of Labor retains Mount Roskill.

11:50 pm: Swarbrick wins Auckland Central.
11:43 pm: Kaye says National is losing “really cool people.”
He says he will give Auckland Central candidate Emma Mellow a hug.
Those who enter through National’s roster in these numbers include Brownlee, Goldsmith, Bishop, David Bennett, Michael Woodhouse, Nicola Willis, Melissa Lee, Nick Smith, Maureen Pugh, and Harete Hipango.
At the moment, National appears to lose MPs like Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi, Agnes Loehini, Paulo Garcia and Lawrence Yule, many of whom contributed to the party’s ethnic diversity, Kaye says.

ACT leader David Seymour retains Epsom by nearly 9,000 votes.
Labor’s Jamie Strange retains Hamilton East by a 2,000 vote margin.
Gaurav Sharma of Labor wins Hamilton West by 4,400 votes.
11:32 pm: Maori Party co-leader Ngarewa-Packer has given her concession speech. Labor Rurawhe leads by more than 1000 votes in Te Tai Hauāuru with 98% of the votes counted.
Ngarewa-Packer says he will return in 2023 and remain co-leader.
11:29 pm: Collins retains his seat in Papakura by a margin of nearly 6,000 votes. But Labor won the electorate vote for the seat.
Luxon moves on into Botany, a national fortress But the seat has also turned red for party voting, the first time since the seat was created.
11:25 pm: Kaye pays tribute to outgoing MP Tracey Martin and her work in the educational space.
He also acknowledged the parliamentary staff who will lose their jobs after tonight.

National’s Simon Watts wins North Shore by nearly a 4,000 margin.
11:23 pm: 95% of votes counted now
National – 26.9% – 35 seats
11:17 pm: Still close in Whangārei – National’s retreat ahead by 160 votes.
Swarbrick seeks to win Auckland Central, with 98.8% of the votes counted.
Hehir says there are signs that national voters have waited to cast their vote. Labor supporters, meanwhile, got out early and knew who they were supporting, he says.
11:14 pm: National’s Andrew Bayly retains Port Waikato (formerly Hunua) by 4,250 votes.
Labor’s McAnulty wins the Wairarapa seat previously held by National by 5,400 votes.
National’s Jacqui Dean wins Waitaki by 3,100 votes.

Jones told 1 NEWS that the party will take some time to reflect on what happened tonight. Jones has hinted at a comeback, but has not indicated what his future may be.
11:09 pm: National’s Scott Simpson wins Coromandel by about 4,200 votes.
National’s Penny Simmonds wins Invercargill by 680 votes.
