Sharp-eyed Wakatere Yacht Club member Justin Mitchell saw American Magic putting its newly launched AC75 Patriot to the test Friday afternoon on its first test sail.

The breeze, which had been light and ideal for a test sail, but suddenly increased, reached 21 knots, giving the AC75 a real workout on its first sail.

The widened bow that had drawn a lot of buzz at its launch really came into play, along with the full bow sections, saving the AC75 from a real mess.

However, in the words of the classic AC mantra “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger”, the American Magic crew will have more confidence in their new AC75.

The antics are caused by problems – operator or mechanics in the foil control system – most likely in this case by a problem with the rudder wing at the wrong angle and the launch of the AC75.
