Police cordoned off Waiwaka Tce in New Plymouth following an alleged bomb threat.

Police are warning people to avoid an area in the New Plymouth suburb of Strandon after a suspicious item was reported.

At 3.30pm, several police units were on scene at the corner of Northgate and Waiwaka Tce and motorists are being asked to avoid the area.

Waiwaka Tce has been blocked at all entrances.

A police officer at the scene said police were responding to an alleged bomb threat.

The New Zealand Defense Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal team has been briefed and will assist.

The area is close to two high schools: Sacred Heart Girls ‘College and New Plymouth Girls’ High School.

The generally busy Northgate on State Highway 3 is now empty after police blocked access to the road following an alleged bomb threat in the area.

Traffic is drifting, causing chaos at the Fitzroy, Devon St East and Coronation Ave traffic lights.

Northgate is the main northern route into and out of New Plymouth.
