“I have had a fantastic time in my career. I really enjoyed it. A great piece of advice I was given early on was: ‘Whatever you do, the easiest part of show business is giving up. Do not do it. And so every time he took a hit, he kept going. I did my first concert in 1981 and then I turned pro in 1986 and from there it went on and on. “

The pandemic and social restrictions in the UK caused him to celebrate his birthday quietly at home with his wife Donna and their son Barney.

But the milestone also meant a serious lifestyle change.

“I had put on a stone and it was the heaviest I’ve ever owned,” he says. “My dad, Daniel, died of heart disease at age 59, when I was 33 years old. The real variety show, which helped launch my career, but he died two weeks later and I never got to see him on television. And I had in the back of my mind that I had to be older than my father.

“People can look really healthy on the outside, but on the inside you don’t know what’s going on. More than half is due to hereditary factors, which is a concern, so every two years I go and have a full medical exam at my local heart clinic.

“I go on the treadmill and then I have a carotid artery test that tells you how much furring you have in the artery in your neck, and that is an accurate predictor of whether then you will have furring in your heart.

“I also have a calcium test for my heart. That most recently went back to zero, which is good, but I also have inherited high cholesterol through my mother, Margaret.

“I was a time bomb. He is a silent killer. But they told me that if I started training, my cholesterol would go down. So the day after my birthday I stopped drinking alcohol because of all the hidden sugars and started looking at what I eat. I cut cakes, breads, and pasta and started eating more fruits, vegetables, salads, and fish. And I’ve been walking our pup, a Shiba Inu named Lulu, every day, which has been great. “

A third series of Breaking dad It has been planned, although with travel and social movement restrictions still to be overcome, it has yet to be decided where Walsh and Barney will travel next. But Walsh knows where he would like to go.

“I have never been to New Zealand and Australia. I’d like to go there. And the Cook Islands, ”he says.

“I cannot bear the cold. We have a holiday home in Portugal and I like to go there when it starts to get cold at home. Anyone who enters our house in Essex (South East England) thinks it is boiling, because I will have the heating on. My wife and son spend time standing by a window, which they open for air.

“It’s crazy. Donna will open the kitchen windows and come out and I’ll go in and close them. Then she’ll come back and open them and I’ll come back and close them again.”
