The University of Otago has a total of 4,035 rooms available to its students, in self catering corridors and university-owned apartments.

University residences are seeing an increase in demand, as students choose to stay and study in New Zealand.

Just over a week is left until the deadline for students who drop out of school and want to reserve one of the 1923 beds in the Auckland University accommodation in 2021.

But the college is already reporting “record requests” for those places.

Reasons include an increase in New Zealand students applying to two or more universities, as well as some choosing to stay in the country, rather than study abroad or experience a gap year.

“Given the inability to easily relocate abroad and the uncertainty surrounding jobs, they may now be deciding that studying in Aotearoa New Zealand is the best option,” said a university spokeswoman.

There are about 16,000 places in student accommodation in the eight universities in the country. In 2019, 24,301 students who dropped out of school gained access to university.

Prices for a room in a catered lounge vary. Some venues at Lincoln University, which has only 555 venues, cost $ 11,938 for a year, while Victoria and Otago offer most of their rooms catered for about $ 16,000, or about $ 421 per week, during 38 weeks.

Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University of Wellington has 859 self-catering rooms available, with prices ranging from $ 7,220 for an apartment to $ 13,148 for a studio.

Auckland high school student Connor Cowie has an offer to Knox College, one of the 14 wards at the University of Otago, but is considering living at home and attending the University of Auckland.

“I feel a little nervous because [going into a hall] It wasn’t really an option for me, but now it’s very real: I have to make the decision to move out of my house and go live alone in Dunedin. “

Cowie’s goal is to get into medical school, so her options are to do biomedical science in Auckland or health science in Otago.

Your deadline to accept the offer at Knox College is October 21; The same date is also the deadline for students offered rooms at the University of Canterbury.

The university, which offers 2,721 rooms, has seen increased interest from domestic students in the five full-service first-year residential corridors, despite the impact on international student enrollment due to Covid-19.

A new room, Tupuānuku, offered 504 additional rooms by 2021, resulting in a total capacity of 2,721 in affiliated rooms, a spokeswoman said.

New Zealand Student Association President Isabella Lenihan-Ikin said Stuff The demand for rooms came as a surprise given the apparent decline in foreign students choosing to study in New Zealand due to Covid-19 travel restrictions.

That could lead to sophomores and juniors staying in the hallways, rather than lying down.

Occupancy at Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University would be slightly below normal due to fewer applications from international students, a spokeswoman said.

The spaces are still available in the halls of the University of Waikato, with a demand similar to that of the same period last year.

Further south, the same demand is developing at the University of Otago, which had a capacity of 3,500 at universities and 535 at UniFlats next year, with numbers outpacing available places.

Those who were lost in the first round of bidding were put on a waiting list and could still find a spot while others decided their future.

That process, a spokeswoman said, would be ongoing until the beginning of the academic year.
