Rory Smyth is wanted by the police after speeding through Dunedin’s CBD and evading the police in a chase.

A man who allegedly drove an Audi through Dunedin’s main shopping street at nearly 100 km / h and then avoided highway spikes is still on the run.

Police are searching for Rory Smyth after an incident in Dunedin on Thursday morning.

Smyth, who is subject to probation conditions after being released from prison last year, sparked a police chase when he was allegedly driving his dark-colored Audi down Stuart St and then George St.

Police estimated that it reached speeds of just under 100 km / h in the 30 km / h commercial zone, and officers gave up the chase.

An attempt was made to nail his vehicle in Evansdale, just north of Dunedin, with Smyth allegedly avoiding the nails and crashing into a truck before fleeing the scene.

Acting Senior Sgt. Anthony Bond said Smyth has ties to the Dunedin and Waikouaiti area and should not be approached.

Smyth went on the run in 2012, following the armed robbery of an Auckland nightclub.

During the robbery, the attacker stole tens of thousands of dollars.

If anyone had information on Smyth, they were urged to call the police at 111 and cite the file number 201008/0927.
