2020 election: ‘I’m proud to be a socialist witch’ – Labor’s Ginny Anderson responds to graffiti rampage

The Labor candidate in Hutt South is fighting back after a graffiti riot caused the destruction of dozens of her billboards.

Ginny Andersen said she lost 74 billboards in this election. She raised the alarm after people reported that fences and other property were damaged by people defacing the signs.

The graffiti appears to be written in the same handwriting and Andersen suspects it was done by the same person.

“From the looks of it, they’re all of the same handwriting,” he said.

The insults range from the basics, “dumb and dumb”, or “sad socialists”, to the political, “Cindy eats her greens”, and the stupid “Communists don’t surf,” a reference to the movie Apocalypse Now.

However, Andersen is prouder of some of the insults.

“The term socialist for me has never been a term of slander for me, it’s a good thing,” Andersen said.

“Socialist is probably my favorite, I’m proud to be a socialist witch.”

Andersen said the signs cost about $ 30 each, but his main concern was the volunteers who cleaned them every day and the people whose fences had been damaged.

“I have two or three volunteers who come out to scrub it every day,” he said.

“We did it [Friday], and then they beat them the next night, ”he said.

He said the attacks appeared to come after a debate on the abortion issue.

Ginny Andersen said that volunteers have to clean the signs every day.

“We had no signs of being targeted until we had a debate on abortion and the recent legislation,” Andersen said.

After that debate, he said, his billboards were the target of an uproar across the electorate. Supporters believe that some graffiti has even occurred in broad daylight.

Andersen said the attacks had united supporters.

“While it has been a real pain in terms of people having to replace them, it has been encouraging on social media,” he said.

“People have been very supportive at work and me.

“It has worked in the opposite direction from what the vandalism was supposed to do.”
