Heavy rains, gales and possibly thunderstorms are forecast for parts of the South Island today.

MetService said rain can reach warning levels or up to 90mm in some places on the west coast, but there are warm temperatures in the east.

Dunedin could peak at 21 ° C, Christchurch 22 ° C and Invercargill 20 ° C.

Driving this climate is a complex frontal system, preceded by a strong wet flow from north to northwest, approaching the South Island before moving north across the island.

This system is expected to bring periods of heavy rain to the west and north of the South Island, and northwestern gales around Canterbury High Country, where advisories and advisories are in effect.

MetService said a depression in the upper atmosphere brings unstable conditions and there is a moderate risk of thunderstorms for Clutha and areas of Dunedin, south of the city of Dunedin.

Any thunderstorm that occurs in these areas could bring localized heavy rainfall of 10mm to 20mm per hour.

On the west coast, there are heavy rain warnings for the Westland ranges, around and north of Otira, from 9am to 8pm today, with an additional 50mm to 70mm of rain to accumulate over what has already fallen. .

For Westland, south of Otira, up to 90mm of rain is expected over the ranges above what has already fallen, and 20-40mm near the coast through 4pm today.

For the headwaters of the Canterbury lakes and rivers, another 60mm to 90mm may accumulate around the main split over what has already fallen, and 40 to 60mm within 15km east of the split.

Heavy rains can cause streams and rivers to grow rapidly. Flooding and slipping on the surface are also possible, and driving conditions can be dangerous.

There is also a strong wind watch for Canterbury High Country, as northwesterly winds can approach strong gales in exposed locations as late as 4 p.m. today, MetService said.

Late tonight, the rain was expected to spread from the west coast to the North Island, reaching most of the western areas from Wellington to Auckland and Northland by late morning, with scattered showers in the east.

On Tuesday, the rain will move to the northeast, spreading from Northland to Gisborne, while the rains will clear to the south.

MetService Forecast Tuporo Marsters said those attending Bledisloe’s game between the All Blacks and Australia in Wellington this afternoon might want to bring a rain-forecast raincoat, accompanied by strong north winds.
