Harry and Meghan called on Americans to reject hate speech in September as part of a live televised broadcast for Time magazine. The royal attendees subsequently immediately began speaking anonymously to the media, saying the comments likely broke protocols established during their famous Megxit negotiations at Sandringham in January.
While the pair have not explicitly referenced a particular party or presidential candidate, something a spokesman for the Sussexes has reiterated since then, commentators have suggested that their comments to get people to reject misinformation and negativity could be a nuisance to US President Donald Trump. Trump has been repeatedly accused of spreading both.
The US president has addressed the couple’s comments.
“I’m not a fan of [Markle], and I would say this … I wish Harry the best of luck, because he will need it, “Trump replied when asked about the Duchess by a reporter.
It is not the first time that Markle has been accused of getting too involved in American politics.
In August, British broadcaster Piers Morgan demanded that the couple be stripped of their titles after Markle spoke at a virtual event organized by a group launched by former first lady Michelle Obama.
“We vote to honor those who came before us and protect those who will come after us, because that’s what the community is about. That’s what this election is specifically about,” he said.
“We are only 75 days away from Election Day and that is very close and yet there is a lot of work to be done in that amount of time, because we all know what is at stake this year. I know. Markle has previously called Trump misogynistic and divisive. Before visiting the UK last year, the US President said Markle was “very nice” but also said that she had been “rude to me”.
