Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has missed this year’s Nobel Peace Prize.
She was a favorite when announcing the winner of this year’s award, due to NZ’s handling of Covid-19, but the United Nations World Food Program was announced as the winner on Friday night (time from New Zealand).
Ardern was asked about the award while campaigning in Northland on Friday. She answered “no” when asked if she was optimistic about her chances.
“I’m extremely flattered that people even consider it within the realm of possibility, but it’s fair to say I’ve never done it,” she said.

Others at high risk this year were World Health Organization climate activist Greta Thunberg, broadcaster and naturalist David Attenborough, and Loujain al-Hathloul, who is an outspoken activist for women’s rights in Saudi Arabia and has been in prison since May 2018.
In total, 211 individuals and 107 organizations were nominated for the award. Other prospects listed by gamblers include US President Donald Trump, the Committee to Protect Journalists, Reporters Without Borders, Black Lives Matter and UNHCR.
Previous New Zealand Nobel Prize winners include Ernest Rutherford, who won the 1908 Chemistry Prize, for his work on the decay of elements and the chemistry of radioactive substances; Maurice Wilkins, who won the 1962 prize in physiology or medicine, for his contribution to the discovery of DNA; and Alan MacDiarmid, who won the 2000 chemistry award, for his contribution to the discovery and development of electronic conductive polymers.
Ardern was also considered to be in the running for last year’s award in the wake of his response to the Christchurch terror attacks, but that year the award went to Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed for making his peace with the staunch enemy. of his country, Eritrea, ending a stalemate. which followed a border war in 1998-2000.
Thunberg had also been considered a favorite in 2019.
Despite speculation about possible winners, the Nobel Committee does not release the names of the nominees.
“To the extent that certain names emerge in anticipated speculation as to who will receive the award for a given year, this is pure conjecture or information provided by the person or persons behind the nomination,” the committee said on its website.
The information in its database was not made public for 50 years.
Nominations for the Peace Prize in a given year must be made by February 1. During February and March a short list is drawn up, which generally includes 20-30 candidates.
