Ponsonby store reveals why Judith Collins was denied entry

A spokesperson for Oscar Wylee told NZME that the refusal was not in any way political, but rather had more to do with the media group than Collins had with her.

“The whole reason was because there was a huge crowd and we didn’t want to be on TV.”

After a staff member who spoke to reporters was told about their political views, the spokesperson said that the company as a whole was not associated with any political party.

This aligns with Collins’ take on the day’s incident, blaming the media for the shameful rejection.

“They didn’t want the media, I don’t think it’s us, I think it could be you,” Collins told reporters.

He also didn’t notice that the woman gave him a thumbs down.

“Her? I didn’t realize that,” he said when asked about it.

Oscar Wylee Ponsonby Road’s Facebook page has been inundated with backlash from National supporters and people who thought the incident was downright rude.

“I certainly know where not to get my glasses from now on. Classless reaction towards Judith,” said one user.

“Even if you are a Labor supporter, it was a hideous gesture.”

“Knowing that your staff is rude to people is reason enough to fail.”

Others praised the store’s actions.

“Well done for turning down that total sham visiting yesterday.”

“For my next pair of glasses, I’ll come see you. It’s your store, you decide.”

Oscar Wylee’s spokesman told NZME that the store received many negative calls, Google reviews, comments on social media, and even canceled reservations.
