Police today named the 5-month-old baby who was tragically killed in Northcote when the stroller he was riding in entered traffic on Monday.

She was Chloe Patricia Jie Labone, from Auckland.

The accident occurred on Lake Rd when a runaway stroller rolled down a hill in front of a passing truck.

Witnesses reported that they saw the basket in the stroller come loose in the collision and the baby lunged forward three more times.

The baby was airlifted to Starship Children’s Hospital with serious injuries, but died at the hospital on Monday afternoon.

The driver of a pickup truck that struck a stroller out of control, Sudhir Saksena, told the Herald it was a nightmare he couldn’t get out of his mind.

He said the stroller rolled down the hill in front of his car “out of nowhere.”

“The stroller went flying down the hill right in front of me. I hit the brakes but it was too late,” he recalled, shaken by the ordeal.

“I didn’t see it coming … I hit the brakes but it was too late.”

Since then, the driver had returned to the place with candles to light in memory of the boy. He revealed that he sat with his wife and cried.

Police say they continued to investigate the incident and provided support to the family during this extremely difficult time.
