Jimmy Cowan, who has been convicted of drinking and driving, was part of the Southland Stags support team during the Miter 10 Cup game between Southland and Waikato in Invercargill on October 4, 2020.

Former All Black running back Jimmy Cowan was convicted of driving under the influence after a witness saw him cross the center line 15 to 20 times near Queenstown.

Cowan, who played 51 test matches for his country between 2004 and 2011, had a reading of 836 mcg of alcohol per liter of breath, more than three times the legal limit, when he was caught behind the wheel on September 12.

A police summary of the events says Quinton James Cowan, 38 [known as Jimmy] He was driving his Holden Colorado on Crown Range Road around 1 p.m. when a witness called police.

He was stopped for a breath test on State Highway 6, Queenstown before being taken to the police station for further testing.

He told police he had been drinking until the early hours of the morning and had slept four hours, the summary says.

He appeared in Invercargill District Court last week and was convicted and fined $ 900 plus court costs of $ 130, disqualified from having a 28-day driver’s license, and ordered to have an alcohol-blocking license.

Along with 51 test games for the All Blacks, Cowan also played more than 100 games for both the Highlanders and his home province of Southland.
