A dash cam has captured the poignant moment when a young girl was hit by a car after she pulled her scooter into traffic on a busy Auckland highway.

The video, shot yesterday afternoon on Hobsonville Rd in West Auckland, shows a woman and three children crossing the street near the entrance to a parking lot.

As traffic speeds by, the third girl, who also rides a scooter but is not wearing a helmet, rushes to catch up with her mother and inadvertently runs into traffic.

An approaching ute manages to stop in time as the child moves forward, right in the path of a car traveling in the opposite direction.

The car hits the girl, sending her flying as the driver of the dash cam car screams in shock.

With the sounds of Bohemian Rhapsody in the dash cam video, the boy can be seen getting up, seemingly unharmed, only for the woman to punch him as they walk away.

Neither police nor St. John were called about the incident and the girl’s condition is unknown, but video shows her walking away with no obvious injuries.

The video was shared on the Dash Cam Owners New Zealand Facebook page with the comment: “Mom must take responsibility.”

One commentator noted that the group had crossed within 50 meters of the traffic lights and a crosswalk.

“In the distance, the traffic is coming from three directions and that’s where you decide to cross with your son on a skateboard behind you. That’s why there is a traffic light crossing there,” he wrote.
