A 5-month-old baby died after a pickup hit his stroller in Auckland this morning.

The boy was seriously injured and treated by St John’s paramedics at the scene on Lake Rd, Northcote, before being taken to Starship Children’s Hospital.

The baby later died from injuries at the hospital, police say.

Ali, a witness who asked that his last name not be used, said a stroller ran down a driveway, crossed the road and entered the other lane before being hit by a pickup truck.

The basket in the stroller came loose in the collision, flying about three cars forward.

“The stroller went down like a rocket,” he said. “Suddenly you see the baby flying through the air.

“It was a beautiful morning, then something like that happened. For a second I thought, ‘what the heck, was that for real?’

“It was something you only see in movies. It wasn’t good, it’s shocking.”

The collision took place on Lake Rd, south of the Exmouth Rd roundabout.

The Police Serious Accident Unit had been at the scene investigating, and a police spokesman previously confirmed that a child had been beaten.

Ali said the van that hit the boy was not traveling fast, but he thought the momentum of the stroller coming down the steep driveway propelled the baby forward.

He said the stroller had to be removed from the truck it collided with, with a large dent in the front of the truck.

Other motorists rushed to try to help but couldn’t do much, Ali said.

The baby must have been wearing a belt, Ali said, because they didn’t fall out of the basket while flying through the air.

He wasn’t sure how the stroller ended up rolling down the driveway.
