An accident on SH6 has closed Whangamoa Rd.

A lane was reopened after a truck and trailer unit rolled, causing traffic delays on State Highway 6 between Nelson and Blenheim for more than four hours.

Police arrived on the scene, on Whangamoa Rd between Kokorua Rd and Hori Bay Rd, shortly after 1 p.m. Monday.

Heavy lifting equipment was used to clear the road and some light vehicles were allowed to pass. At 5.25 p.m., police said a lane had been reopened and traffic management remained in place as staff and contractors continued to clear the scene.

The truck driver was not injured in the accident.

A traffic alert on the Waka Kotahi NZ Transportation Agency website said that due to the accident, SH6 was closed in Whangamoas and there were detours in place.

South of Nelson, a 30 km stretch of SH6 between Motupiko and Kawatiri Junction is closed for roadworks. It requires a 62 km detour for traffic traveling both north and south.

The closure was due to the need to upgrade two sewer pipes severely damaged by a storm in Glenhope in November 2019.

Police warned motorists while SH6 was closed due to the accident, if they couldn’t avoid the area or delay the trip, to expect significant delays. The situation would be reviewed again at 5 in the afternoon.
