Swifts defender Maddy Turner, pictured, and her teammate Sarah Klau delivered a failed ‘Harrison Hoist’ against the Fevers on Sunday.
New South Wales Swifts defender Maddy Turner has presented a contender for the worst ‘Harrison Hoist’ in netball history.
In Sunday’s Australian Super Netball minor semi-final clash, the Swifts tried the defensive tactic made famous by former Silver Ferns star Anna Harrison.
Goalkeeper Sarah Klau tried to lift Turner to stop Fever Alice Teague-Neeld’s attack, but the movement backfired and Turner was unable to generate any lift. Teague-Neeld ended up faking the shot and passing teammate Jhaniele Fowler, who scored the goal.
Harrison first made the controversial move in 2012 in the former trans-Tasman netball league, where one defender lifts another during a jump to shut off the shooter in midair.

The move has become common in netball and is used regularly in elite games.
Turner’s failed effort drew a lot of amusement to commenters who said. “That wasn’t just a lift, it was a grab. I don’t think I’ve seen that before. That was absolute gold. “
Jamaican international and former Southern Steel standout Fowler was in a threatening touch for the Fever in their 67-62 win over the defending champions, making her 55 attempts in their 100th national league outing.
It was a comeback for the Fever, who trailed by nine goals at the end of the third quarter.
The Fever will face New Zealand netball star Laura Langman, Sunshine Coast Lightning, in the preliminary final next Sunday.
Whoever wins the preliminary final will advance to face the Melbourne Vixens in the Super Netball grand final in Brisbane on October 18.
