Wellington CBD area blocked due to fire

A section of Wellington’s CBD crashes after a transformer caught fire.

Senior Station Officer Brendon Wood of Thorndon Station said a circuit caught fire at the Jaycee Building on Willis St.

A fire at the corner of Willis Street and Manners Street in downtown Wellington.  Fire is believed to be a short circuit in a switch box.  Apparently there was an explosion.

It was unknown if anyone was in the building. A gang was entering the building.

A section of Willis St was cordoned off with four fire trucks and a command vehicle present.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand (Fenz) spokesperson did not have details on the severity of the fire, but confirmed that a transformer was on fire.

The energy authorities had also been called.

Fire crews were still at the scene shortly after 5 p.m. and were waiting for help from the electricity authorities.

A large crowd of Sunday shoppers stopped to watch firefighters deal with the fire on Willis St in downtown Wellington.
