Cordons were quickly placed around Jellicoe Park, Manurewa, after a man’s body was discovered Saturday night.
Residents near a park where a man was found dead Saturday night said they heard screaming, fighting and people fleeing the scene shortly before police arrived.
Police have launched a homicide investigation and are asking the public for help after the incident at Jellicoe Park in Manurewa, south of Auckland.
Emergency services were called to the park shortly after 11 p.m., where attempts to revive an unresponsive man were unsuccessful. An examination of the scene was underway on Sunday.
No arrests had been made in connection with the incident, but there was no thought to be a risk to the public, Acting Detective Inspector Warrick Adkin said.

A resident who Stuff He agreed not to name said he was watching television when he heard people walking outside to “very loud music.”
“It seemed like they had a stereo or a sound system, it was very loud and it surprised me,” he said.
“Shortly after that I heard screaming, fighting, people swearing and then I could hear someone fleeing … passing my house.”

He said he did not know someone had died until police arrived after 15 minutes and saw emergency services trying to revive them.
“In this place, we hear people passing by with loud music all the time, sometimes there are cars parked near the park, people drinking.
“I close our door on the weekends for that.”
Another neighbor said his family also heard a commotion outside after 11 p.m.
“We didn’t know what was going on until the police came to talk to us this morning.”
Police were seen talking to nearby residents Sunday. The park is used as a sports ground and is home to the Manurewa Amateur Athletics and Harriers Club and the Jellicoe Park Tennis Club.
A playground is located at the end of the field.
