Canterbury has historically broken its two-game losing streak, recording the first gold points win at the 10 Miter Cup.

After losses by one point to both Taranaki and Hawke’s Bay, Canterbury fell to the limit again, heading for the first golden point of the competition when it tied at 26 with Wellington.

Wellington’s top five Jackson Garden-Bachop missed a chance to be the hero when he scored a deflected drop goal, before becoming the villain by throwing a pass that Isaiah Punivai intercepted to walk away and score the game-winning try.

Canterbury trailed 26-21 with time out in regulation time, before Tom Christie scored to tie them, with Fergus Burke missing a potential conversion to win the game, but Punivai salvaging a victory with his gold point heroism.

The victory places Canterbury in the top four in the Premiership, although they are still behind Wellington, who scored two extra points despite the loss.

There was also an important victory for Counties Manukau, who had Alamanda Motuga to thank for a hat-trick when they beat Manawatū 36-30.

With a 25-15 slide shortly after the break, the Counties came back with three quick attempts to clinch their first win and move from the bottom of the Championship ladder, while Northland is the surprise leader of the Championship after capsizing Taranaki 35-25.

This is how the Canterbury and Wellington Golden Point drama unfolded.
