Yet Twitter has spoken out, warning its users not to make death threats and saying that any tweet that “wishes or expects death, serious bodily injury, or fatal illness” will cause the social media giant to remove posts.

The stance has created a backlash on the platform, and other Twitter users are quick to point out that others have not had such a response when they have received death threats.

“Do you know how many people here are constantly calling for genocide against Jews, Muslims, Blacks or LGBTQ,” wrote actress Mara Wilson.

“And that’s just a basic Nazi! But a lot of people call for death against so many people for many reasons here.”

User William Wikinson shared a tweet sent to him, which read, “I hope you die (sic),” along with a screenshot of the Twitter response saying that the rules had not been violated.

“This was your failure 12 hours ago hahaha,” he wrote.

According to the platform’s guidelines, “wishing or expecting serious harm to a person” includes, but is not limited to, wanting someone to die as a result of a serious illness, accident, or physical injury.

Twitter says post deletions won’t mean accounts are immediately suspended from the site.
