Previous world leaders who contracted the virus, which has killed more than a million worldwide and infected nearly 35 million, include British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro.
When Johnson felt bad, Ardern texted him best wishes from New Zealand. But she says she does not have the personal number of the president of the United States, so she asked for their thoughts to be expressed through official channels.
“New Zealand wishes anyone experiencing COVID a speedy recovery and our best wishes and all the best,” he said.
It is too early to say what the implications of the diagnosis might have in New Zealand, Ardern told reporters. It comes just a month away from the American elections.
“We have not yet seen in the administration the likely effect they believe it will have on the electoral campaign. Of course, we have not seen an election date moved before and it is a whole process for that to happen,” he said. He said.
“So at this stage I would say it would all be very speculative, we just haven’t heard anything official from the White House in that regard.”
Trump and his wife were diagnosed with the disease on Friday after a positive test result was received from aide to the president, Hope Hicks.
On Saturday morning (NZT), he was transferred to Walter Reed Medical Center, which authorities said was just a precaution. In a video filmed before flying there by helicopter, Trump said he was “very good.”
The president received a single eight-gram dose of Regeneron’s cocktail of polyclonal antibodies, as well as zinc, vitamin D, famotidine, melatonin and aspirin, according to his doctor.
While the White House has played down the concern, a CNN source said Saturday that the situation was “dire” and that Trump was fatigued, tired and having some trouble breathing.
Other current and former world leaders have sent their best wishes to Trump, including Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, Boris Johnson, and Scott Morrison.
