Sam Burgess’s lawyer has denied Australia’s impressive claims about the former England rugby league star.
A report in The Australian alleges that incidents of domestic violence, drug use and stalking involving Burgess were covered up by his former club NRL South Sydney Rabbitohs.
Burgess allegedly had to be injected with liquid tranquilizer after a drug-fueled binge and failed drug tests for MDMA and ketamine, which was reportedly covered up by the Rabbitohs using false identities to conceal positive tests for the illegal substances.
The report also claims that Burgess allegedly assaulted his then-pregnant wife Phoebe Burgess in November 2018 in front of her father Mitch Hooke. The couple formalized their divorce in April this year.
Phoebe Burgess, when approached for comment, told The Australian: “This is an extremely painful and difficult time, and I am trying to care for my two young children as we go through an extremely traumatic chapter in our lives.”
It was also revealed that Burgess allegedly claimed in September 2018 that then-NRL CEO Todd Greenberg told him that he would not be suspended for a sexting scandal that was still being investigated by the league and his club.
The scandal arose when a woman allegedly complained to the Rabbitohs that Burgess and other players had subjected her to sexual harassment during a video call, where Burgess allegedly showed her his penis.
Burgess’s attorney, Mark O’Brien, has flatly denied the allegations against the 31-year-old, who is currently a development coach at Souths after retiring from rugby league in October last year.
“The allegations are false and constitute indefensible defamation against my client,” O’Brien told The Australian.
“It is clear that the sources of the false accusations are those that are currently in dispute with my client on various issues.”
Burgess has played in both the union and the league, making five appearances for the England rugby team and 24 appearances for the England league team.
