A man accused of escaping from a run isolation hotel in central Auckland has been taken into custody.

The 36-year-old, whose identity we are unable to disclose, reportedly walked through much of Auckland since midnight Sunday, before returning to the hotel. Source: 1 NEWS


The 36-year-old, who had been deported from Australia last month, appeared today in Auckland District Court, charged with failing to remain in an isolation or quarantine facility administered for a period required under the Public Health Response Act. Covid-19 and Order 2020.

Temporary name removal has been granted and will reappear in two weeks.

He is alleged to have spent hours wandering Auckland in the early hours of Monday morning after escaping from his hotel room using tied sheets, before returning to the main entrance of the Ramada hotel.

He had tested negative for Covid-19 on day three and day 12.
