The consumer tested 32 detergents against 10 common stains.
A washing liquid that sells for $ 10 a liter washes only slightly cleaner than water, according to Consumer testing.
In a test of 32 powder and liquid detergents, the consumer regulator found that several were on par or performed only slightly better than water alone.
The detergents were tested against 10 common stains including grass, blood, baby food and chocolate ice cream, in top and front load washers.
Among the most expensive detergents tested, Ecostore’s Eucalyptus Laundry Liquid scored 47% when used in a top-loading machine, while water alone scored 44%.

It performed better on a front loader, 65 percent versus 55 for a tap wash.
At $ 10 a liter on average, the Ecostore product was more expensive than the top performer in a top loader, Persil Ultimate powder, which scored 63 percent in a top loader and has an average price of $ 7 a kilogram.

It was $ 2.99 cheaper than the best performing product in front loader tests, Dynamo Professionals 7 Actions in 1 Wash, at an average of $ 12.99 a liter and a score of 82%.
Ecostore R&D manager Huia Iti said the company disagreed with the statements made and questioned the quality of the evidence.
“We test through independent experts to ensure the quality of our products.
“In addition to performance results, we offer consumers a guarantee of product safety from the perspective of people and the planet, ensuring that they are respectful, responsible and ethical throughout their life cycle.”
Iti pointed to Canstar’s research showing the brand was voted the number one laundry powder and liquid by New Zealand consumers.

Several detergents were on par or performed only slightly better than water alone in consumer tests.
Several other detergents were also found to be deficient in Consumer testing, including Essentials Laundry Powder and Essentials Laundry Liquid Clean Wash Apple.
They both fared no better than water in a front loader.
On the top-loading machines, Living Green Lavender and Aloe and Earthwise Plant-powered Laundry Liquid Ultra Sensitive Fragrance-free scored only slightly higher than water, at 45 and 46 percent respectively.
At the other end of the spectrum, two brands stood out. Dynamo dominated in front loader stakes and Persil was a similar standout in top loader performance.
