Elections in New Zealand 2020: Tova O’Brien – National is in classic opposition party death spiral

Not entirely your fault: COVID-19, Jacindamia Mach 2, etc.

And the National Party is chaotic, best illustrated by its election campaign, tax cuts, bribes, free money for all.

It should have been the Hail Mary pass for the party, but thanks to Paul Goldsmith and endless accusations that his prosecutors were holier than the Vatican, they were unable to capitalize.

National ended up looking weak in the economy and that’s the worst of the low blows for a party that has traditionally been known as the strong and firm economic managers.

It’s getting harder and harder to see National come back from this.

To his credit, Collins is handling poor poll results exceptionally well, although compared to his reaction to our last poll, anything would have been an improvement.

In July, Collins lashed out at the reputable Newshub-Reid Research poll. He reeked of desperation and ended up with an egg to his face when, inevitably, all subsequent public polls sided with him.

Today, he got on the right track, focusing on the positives: National is making progress, though less than 30 percent is nothing to celebrate, and he’s having fun with it all.

It would be so heartbreaking and discouraging for Collins, she has fought for this job, this opportunity for so long and it is not turning out the way she thought.

But he turned the corner this week after a low energy start to the campaign, won the first leaders debate and was the restart he needed.

He intends to have fun for the past three weeks and it shows, and voters respond to that.

It may not be enough to cross the line on October 17, but Collins put in place a total contingency plan today, declaring that he will go nowhere if he loses the election.

A bold and fearless Collins definitely has a better chance than a belligerent and boring Collins.
