One person was killed in a major accident involving four cars on SH6 near Nelson.

A police spokeswoman confirmed at 7:30 pm that a person had died in the accident and the road remained closed. Three others were injured in the accident.

He said the incident was reported around 3.35pm Sunday and occurred on the Blenheim side of the Whangamoa Saddle near Kokorua Rd.

Four people were injured in the accident that apparently involved four cars.

A spokeswoman for St John previously said two helicopters had transported a patient to Wellington hospital.

One person was seriously injured and the other was seriously injured upon arrival, he said. A Capital & Coast DHB spokeswoman said the two patients arrived at Wellington Hospital sometime after 5:45 p.m.

Two other patients were transferred to Nelson Hospital in moderate condition.

The major accident unit attended and the Nelson Marlborough rescue helicopter was called in to transport the injured.

New Zealand Fire and Emergency spokesman Andrew Norris said four crews were sent into the accident and told there were four cars involved.

Norris said one person was trapped and had to be cut from the vehicle. He said the accident spanned a 30-meter stretch of road.

The road is expected to be closed from both ends for some time with a significant detour in place via SH63 at St Arnaud and Wairau Valley.

Police are urging motorists to avoid the area or delay their journey.
