Reports of buildings shaking in New Plymouth, as the earthquake was felt from Nelson to Auckland.

A 4.9 magnitude earthquake has been reported in the center of the North Island.

Geonet reported that the earthquake occurred at 4.47pm Sunday, at a depth of 14 km, 40 km southwest of Taumarunui, King Country.

There were reports that the earthquake was felt as far away as Nelson and Auckland.

New Plymouth’s tallest office block, the eight-story Worley Parsons building, shook for about 45 seconds.

While there were initially no reports of damage, several rocks appear to have been dislodged by the roadside earthquake at Tarata Saddle, near Inglewood.

Tarata local Michael Riley said Stuff the locals have been busy moving cones around the chair to prevent traffic accidents, until the rocks can be cleaned.

At Mt Ruapehu, people were briefly taken to the Chateau Tongariro Hotel when the earthquake triggered a lahar warning that turned out to be a false alarm.
