A rescue helicopter at the scene of a car accident near Nelson.

Four people were injured, including one seriously, in a major accident that appears to involve four cars on SH6 between Nelson and Blenheim.

A police spokeswoman said the incident was reported around 3.35pm Sunday and occurred on the Blenheim side of Whangamoa Saddle near Kokorua Rd.

A spokeswoman for St John said two helicopters were each transporting a patient to Wellington Hospital. One person was seriously injured and the other was seriously injured, he said.

Four people were injured in the accident that apparently involved four cars.

Two more patients were transferred to Nelson Hospital and both were in moderate condition.

The major accident unit attended and the Nelson Marlborough rescue helicopter was called in to transport the injured.

Two helicopters were at the scene and are believed to be taking two patients to Wellington Hospital.

It appears that four cars were involved in the accident.

The road is expected to be closed from both ends for some time with a significant detour in place via SH63 at St Arnaud and Wairau Valley.

Police are urging motorists to avoid the area or delay their journey.
