A car was found partially submerged in the river on Opaki Road

Police are concerned that someone was swept down a Wairarapa River after a car crashed into the water Sunday morning.

It appears the car crashed on Chapel St in Masterton into the Waipoua River. However, when the emergency service arrived, the submerged car was empty.

In a statement, police said they were “concerned that someone may have gotten out of the vehicle and got into trouble in the water.”

Since then, the car has been washed down the river, and the water is still too dangerous for the police dive team to investigate.

A Life Flight helicopter conducted a search and found nothing to suggest that a person was in the water.

Police planned to wait until river levels dropped before they could remove the car, but they were looking for its owner, he said.

Locals saw the helicopter fly over the river and the area around Queen Elizabeth Park.

Police have asked anyone who saw the accident or who has more information to contact them.
