Tom Hanks paid for one of the film’s most iconic Forrest Gump scenes, after the studio said they couldn’t cover it.
In an episode of In Depth with Graham Bensinger, the actor said that director Robert Zemeckis wanted to film the race scene in America, but could not secure funding.
Hanks, who was the lead in the 1994 film, said he and Robert came together as “kindred souls” to make the scene happen.
He told Bensinger: “We called him The Run and I said, ‘Why is he talking to me? He’s the boss. I’ll do what he says. This is above my pay.” And Bob came and we talked and he said, ‘Look, you’re Forrest Gump, you’re the main role in this. I need you not to be an actor, but my soul mate. I will open the cuts and talk about all aspects. of the post-production of this with you if you are going to be my collaborator and not just my employee ‘”
“I said, ‘Deal, let’s do it.’ He said, ‘Well, this race is going to cost X amount of dollars’ and it wasn’t cheap. I said,’ Okay, you and I are going to split that amount and we ‘pay it back.’ He told the studio, Paramount, at the time that the scene would be paid for, but that he would have to ‘share the profits a little more.’
“To which the studio said, ‘Fabulous, great, that’s good, it’s good for us too.’ It happened again, they said ‘We can’t get the insurance so you can’t shoot’ and Bob and I said, ‘Okay, we’ll cover the insurance,’ and we did. So it ended up being really easy after that. “
The film went on to earn $ 1,043 million]at the box office, and Hanks took home an estimated $ 99 million.
He also won the Best Actor award at the Oscars for his performance.
