Police charged a 47-year-old man with murder after a woman died in south Auckland on Monday.

Acting Detective Inspector Shaun Vickers said the victim knew the arrested man.

Jason Mokaraka, who lives next door to the woman who died, said he and his family were out for the weekend and returned to find police cars outside their neighbor’s home.

“We were also going crazy when we found out what had happened,” Mokoraka told Stuff.

He said the family that lived in the house was being kept secret.

“They were good neighbors.

“They practically stood their ground, they went to work and church, and then they came back.”

Police had been investigating neighbors and asking if neighbors had heard anything Sunday night, said Lindsay Owen, who shares a fence with the victim.

Owen said he rarely heard anything from the people who lived in the victim’s home.

“All I know is that they spoke another language, I don’t know if they spoke English.”

He said the people in the house where the woman died never caused any problems.

Vickers said the arrested man was expected to appear in Manukau District Court on Friday morning.

He said the police were still making sure that all relatives abroad were notified of the woman’s death.

“Our deepest thoughts and condolences go out to the victim’s family at this extremely difficult time,” added Vickers.
