Melissa Ewings was reported missing Monday when she did not show up for work and her family says they have serious concerns for her well-being.
On Sunday, the 31-year-old told a friend that she was going for a walk along the Clarence River near Kaikōura, but she has not been heard from since.
Police officers and Land Search and Rescue volunteers have been searching Clarence Valley to find her.
LandSAR Executive Director Carl Mconie says the volunteers were actively involved in the search efforts, but referred inquiries about the search operation to the police.
MetService meteorologist Lewis Ferris says conditions in the area were “very stabilized” over the past weekend, with nothing of meteorological significance near the Clarence Valley.
“Since yesterday there have been strong winds from the northwest and rains from the west in that region in the afternoon, possibly overnight,” he said.
“A northwest wind is not a very cold wind, but if it is very strong or in an exposed area, it can be stronger.”
While MetService had no temperature readings for the Clarence Valley, nearby Kaikōura recorded a warm 23 ° C at the local airport on Saturday.
“On Sunday it had a maximum of 15.8 ° C and on Monday 17.9 ° C, so there were definitely no cold temperatures during the day, but at night it was below 5 ° C, so there was the possibility of some icy conditions in protected areas, “said Ferris.
According to Environment Canterbury, the river is currently flooded and was flowing at a height of 60 cubic meters per second on Saturday.
