Residents of the earthquake-damaged Christchurch suburb of Brooklands say child runners are flocking to their suburb to drag and burn.

A Brooklands woman, who spoke to 1News anonymous because she was too scared, said the runners, who sometimes reached their 50s, “drove us crazy” with their loud “crazy driving.”

She said the boy racers could be found on “almost every corner” and were using the roads as a racetrack.

Another resident said she saw a runner making a “donut” before another ran into them.

Christchurch has often become a hub for children’s runners over the years with annual events like Invasion of the Birds, which encourages children’s runners to circle the city’s four main avenues: Bealey , Fitzgerald, Deans and Moorhouse.

It was understood that around 2000 children’s runners from across the South Island attended the event in 2018.
