New Zealand 2020 election: National’s $ 4 billion fiscal hole has grown even bigger

“Paul Goldsmith has checked and has not found any other errors or anyone else,” he said.

But Newshub does.

National has made the same mistake with its capital allocation, that’s the money set aside to build things like schools and hospitals. Goldsmith took her numbers from the May Budget, awarding herself $ 18.63 billion from next year to 2027.

But in last week’s Pre-Election Fiscal Update (PREFU), the numbers changed, with just $ 18.542 billion available during that time, leaving National with another $ 88 million deficit.

Collins said he trusts his finance spokesman.

“Yes,” he said when asked Monday.

But Labor says it shouldn’t, and Goldsmith has left its leader wide open to attack before the election.

“This is not only sloppy, it’s a sign of a lack of competition,” said Grant Robertson, Labor finance spokesman.

National said it would release a new plan with corrected figures, but it had not yet been updated Monday night.

Sunday’s reveal should have been an encouragement for National to make sure all the numbers were correct. But Goldsmith hasn’t been able to spot the same basic error, and while it’s not in the billions this time around, it’s still significant.

Making this mistake once may be forgivable, but twice by no means, not when you are auditioning for finance minister.
