Ōropi shooting: man seriously wounded taken to Waikato hospital

A man suffered serious injuries from an apparent gunshot wound in Ōropi early Sunday morning.

The “injuries were due to an apparent gunshot wound,” a police spokeswoman said.

St John’s ambulance spokeswoman Siobhan Campbell said an ambulance attended after being alerted by a call at 12:02 a.m.

“One patient was taken to Tauranga hospital in serious condition,” Campbell said.

At 7:30 am, the patient was taken to Waikato hospital and a spokeswoman said “the person is stable.”

Police said in a statement that a man was arrested after Seales Rd was shot in Ōropi. The wounded man was not the shooter.

Police were alerted to a firearms incident on Mountain Road, Ōropi, around 12 am.

Upon arrival, a man with serious injuries was found.

The Armed Criminal Brigade was deployed as a precautionary measure and an Eagle unit flew in from Auckland to assist local personnel.

” Shortly before 1 a.m., a firearm was fired again near Seales Rd, striking a civilian vehicle. No one was injured. ”

One person was found at an address in Ōropi and after negotiations, he was arrested around 3.30 am, police said.

A 51-year-old man was charged with recklessly firing a firearm and is due to appear in Tauranga District Court on Monday.

Police also conducted an examination of the scene on Sunday.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident, one person died after a single vehicle accident on Ōropi Rd in Ōropi on Saturday.

The police were called to the accident at 1:25 p.m.

The Serious Accident Unit attended the scene and is working with the Western Bay Highway Police team to establish the cause of the accident.

The name of the handicapped had not been released last night.
