Auckland Central has historically been a Labor seat, only losing it once between 1919 and 2005 (in 1993 to the Left Alliance).
One could say that all of Kaye’s victories were due to the Green and Labor supporters splitting the vote: each victory was by such a small margin that if all Green voters had cast their vote for the Labor candidate, Labor would have won the seat, and vice versa.
There is still a chance that the vote will split, as many Labor voters at this stage plan to vote for Swarbrick – 15.7 percent. Only 60 percent of Labor voters said they would definitely vote for White.
In June, White said RNZ voters should choose her because she “would do this job very seriously”, dismissing Swarbrick as a “celebrity.” Swarbrick later tweeted that White was “using the same attacks against me as misogynists.”
“It’s a seat with very, very strong contenders, and I’m not underestimating them,” he told Newshub Nation.
“It’s something I learned last time, things can change very, very fast and I don’t take anything for granted.”
