It is the first time in 15 years that Altanic’s hurricane season has exceeded the designated storm name on the list for 2020.

According to the National Weather Service of the United States, with the formation of Hurricane Alpha just below Portugal, it has become necessary to use the Greek alphabet for the remaining storms.
The incredibly active hurricane season has meant that the 21 default names have already been used this year.
Only the 2005 hurricane season, which included the devastating Hurricane Katrina, has so far made it into the Greek alphabet.
Unlike the traditional list, the letters of the Greek alphabet will not be removed at the end of the month according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).
With a few months to go until the hurricane season ends in late November, this year’s season could surpass the 2005 record.
