A relative of one of the vagrants had told police that the group had experience and that they carried supplies for a few days.
The officers had phone details of the three party members and were trying to reach them.
The relative said it was likely that the group had decided not to cross the river due to the large amount of recent rain and would wait until the water level dropped.
Remutaka Forest Park is a protected area near Wellington.
The park covers 220 square meters. It has short walks and cabins that can be reserved for longer homeless people.
