Pak ‘n Save has removed a television ad after receiving a complaint that the voiceover “completely murdered” te reo Māori.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) received a complaint from a viewer who was concerned that the voice-over did not pronounce Wainoni correctly.

The voice-over in the ad read “welcome to Pak’n Save shopping … this is Shannon, she filled her cart at Pak ‘n Save Wainoni”.

The author said the ad “contributed to the racism and mispronunciation” of the Maori words te reo.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) received a complaint from a concerned viewer that the voice-over did not pronounce Wainoni correctly.

Pak ‘n Save said the ad was no longer running and that it would not use it again.

The ASA said the supermarket “expressed its gratitude” to the complainant for raising the matter and said it was seeking to improve the pronunciation of te reo.

Given the advertiser’s cooperative commitment to the process and the self-regulatory action taken to remove the ad, the ASA said there would be no use bringing the matter before the grievance board.
