Cyclist dies crossing road near Christchurch intersection

A bicyclist who died at a Christchurch intersection was crossing a street when he was hit by a pickup truck.

Emergency crews responded to the accident on Brougham St, near the intersection of Christchurch Southern Motorway and Simeon St in Addington, just before 8 p.m. Thursday.

A police spokeswoman said the rider was taken to Christchurch Hospital in critical condition where he later died.

Stuff understands that the cyclist, a man in his 50s, was crossing the street when he was hit by the truck.

The exact cause of the accident remains under investigation, a police spokeswoman said.

Two fire crews also attended the accident and the road was closed for a time.

Another 19 have died on Canterbury’s roads so far this year, 13 fewer than at the same time last year, according to road death toll statistics from the New Zealand Transport Agency.
