The Auckland Regional Public Health Service (ARPHS) alerted the school on Wednesday to the positive case and announced that the school would be closed for cleaning until at least next week. He also asked earlier Thursday that everyone at the school get tested, though he believes there are very few close contacts.
However, parents at the school are concerned that it took two days to find out about the case.
“In fact, I am still very angry. I am so pissed. I am very worried. One, I am pregnant and two, my son, is very bad with asthma,” Ramona Ah Fook said.
Another parent said the school should have closed “immediately” after the positive result came in.
“The school could have been closed earlier for the safety of families and children,” they said.
Chapel Downs Elementary School principal Vaughan van Rensburg told Newshub he learned of the case at 2 p.m. Wednesday.
“We are just working with the community and supporting the community and obviously supporting the whanau who are involved in the case,” he said.
ARPHS said it only learned Wednesday morning that the girl went to school and said “this information was shared as soon as the facts were confirmed.”
School families who were queuing for a COVID-19 test told Newshub that they are concerned and concerned.
“We prefer to be safe. We just want more information from the school,” said one.
“I’m just worried about seeing if we can have it. They haven’t said anything about which child has had it, so yeah, [I want] to be safe and get tested, “said another.
No new community cases were announced on Wednesday, marking the third day in a row that no new infections were linked to Auckland’s resurgence. However, seven new cases were announced which are all imported.
