A property owner in Upper Hutt is furious after a group of people hired his luxury mansion to host an all-night undercover party without his knowledge.
The Jewel of Akatarawa owner, who did not want to be named, said he rented his property over the weekend, using Airbnb, to what he believed was a group of six people staying overnight on a weekend getaway.
On Saturday night, he was alerted by security camera motion sensors when one car after another appeared on the property.
“I called her and said, are you going to have a party? And she said, ‘oh, I didn’t know I had to tell you about that.’

The owner said he allowed parties on the property but required a $ 1000 security deposit and management to ensure there was no damage.
He allowed the woman to stay after she told him it was a friend’s birthday, but asked that everyone leave the property before midnight.
At midnight, he rechecked the security cameras and there was no sign that the party was ending.
In the morning, the cars were still there.
When he arrived he was met with a “total disaster”, with pills on the floor and broken glass all over the house. The parked cars had damaged the lawn and a sliding door had also been broken.
He had to kick the revelers off the property, he said.
It took three people seven hours to clean the house, and he hoped that between repairing the damage and renting a dumpster, the cost would be in the thousands of dollars.
He also had to personally apologize to neighbors, at least one of whom had filed a noise complaint with Upper Hutt City Council.
But it wasn’t until his property was tagged in an Instagram post that he was alerted to the possibility that it was more than just a runaway party.
“Step 1,” the post read, “Rent a mansion on Airbnb. Step 2. Invite two hostels. Step 3. Get three DJs. Congratulations, you just threw an amazing party. “
Now he was concerned that the organizer was running parties like a business, inviting young people from local youth hostels and charging admission.
When he spoke to party-goers, none of them could point to the organizer.
He had contacted the police to issue illegal entry notices.
A police spokesman confirmed that they had received a report about the celebration of the party. The file is currently being evaluated.
Airbnb’s head of public policy for New Zealand and Australia Derek Nolan said the company’s policy banning parties is clear.
“In this case, the criminals have been removed from our platform and we are ready to assist the police with investigations and support the host through our host’s guarantee. Reported behavior is completely unacceptable and has no place on Airbnb. ”
Negative incidents were rare and the company had zero tolerance.
“We continue to work in partnership with law enforcement and government to help deliver better outcomes for hosts, guests, and the wider community.”
The match organizer was contacted for comment but declined to speak with Stuff.
