‘Live from the Octagon’: Seagulls, bells interrupt PM

The prime minister had to laugh at various interruptions and technical difficulties during morning show interviews on the Octagon today, which one host described as louder than a “Saturday night when students are in town.”

Talking to John Campbell about Breakfast Amid “cool” weather, Ardern was in the middle of answering questions about the upcoming Bledisloe Cup when his headset failed.

After revealing that the players will be quarantined but will still be able to train together, the technical issues began, leaving Ardern holding his headset and struggling to understand what Campbell was saying.

“Sorry John, I just lost you there,” he said. “Your camera operator is sharing the questions with me!”

“Can you hear me, Prime Minister?” Campbell asked.

“Not really, I’m afraid John, unfortunately,” Ardern replied.

Later in the interview they were again interrupted by bells that struck the time.

“Oh my giddy aunt, the next Robbie Burns will get up and start wandering and screaming!” Campbell said.

“I’m sorry I can’t hear you over the bells, John,” the prime minister continued. “We are very much alive!”

“Long live from the Octagon, it’s not even that loud on a Saturday night when the students are in town!” Campbell said.

It was also interrupted by a flock of seagulls who wanted to get in on the action.

Ardern also had trouble with his living cross while in The AM Show.

Host Duncan Garner, whose questions were being drowned out by the squawking seagulls, asked if the Prime Minister could “get rid of them.”

“Someone get rid of the seagulls.”

Just when Ardern was telling Garner that he was “lucky he didn’t get the bells”, right at the tail they rang.

Ardern then shared a post on his Instagram page.

“This morning’s morning media round was rounded off with a failed headset, a flock of seagulls coming to visit and a round of very loud bells,” he wrote.

“I can only apologize to anyone who has been watching this morning!”
