Hammersmith Bridge in danger of imminent collapse, three others under repair

Taranaki’s Franc Vissers is also concerned that his local Thames River crossing is in imminent danger of falling.

“It could collapse any second. A little heat and some wind and it could fall right behind us.”

Hammersmith Bridge is so unsafe that ships are not even allowed to pass under it.

“This is where the Oxford-Cambridge regatta sinks. That won’t happen this year. There are rowing clubs everywhere that can’t use it. No one can go under,” Vissers said.

The bridge repair will cost $ 250 million. That’s too expensive for city councils, the London transport operator TfL and the UK government; no one is willing to pay for it.

And that’s not the only London Bridge that is collapsing.

The Vauxhall Bridge and Waterloo Bridge are closed to car traffic while receiving structural repairs, which means that only buses and pedestrians can use it.

Last month, London Tower Bridge broke down, with its mobile platform stuck open for over an hour, creating even more chaos for commuters.
