New Dunedin hospital valued at $ 1.4 billion to feature two main buildings

The new Dunedin hospital, one of the largest infrastructure projects in the country, will feature two separate buildings.

Health Minister Chris Hipkins announced Monday approval of the detailed business case, which includes the design and master plan.

It comes as Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, who three years ago promised that a Labor government would begin construction of a new Dunedin hospital in her first term, visits the city.

Demolition work on the old Cadbury site continues. That block would become a new inpatient facility, to be completed in 2028, and Wilson’s old car will block the outpatient facility, which will be completed in early 2025, Hipkins said.

The government agreed that the new hospital, which is priced at $ 1.4 billion, will have two separate buildings.

“The new Dunedin Hospital will transform healthcare in the Southern region and provide better health outcomes for future generations,” said Hipkins.

To assist with design, demolition, piloting and project management, $ 127 million has been released.

However, Dunedin North National Candidate Michael Woodhouse said the business case that was not presented to cabinet before February 2021 was “scandalous.”

Further delays could put lives at risk, he said.

“It is important that we do this well. The new Dunedin Hospital will be world class and will be the largest hospital ever built in New Zealand, ”said Hipkins.

“There will be improved clinical capacity and digital technology, and more integrated services to support new models of care.”
