Detectives investigating Madeleine McCann’s disappearance are searching for a second German homeless man who was living in the Algarve at the same time the 3-year-old disappeared.
The man in question is understood to be a former friend of McCann’s main suspect and convicted pedophile, Christian Brueckner.
The Mirror reported that the anonymous man is being treated as a witness, not a suspect, and hopes that he can leave the case against Brueckner completely open.
The German homeless man is believed to have lived in a caravan near a remote reservoir less than 15 km from Praia da Luz, where McCann disappeared.
“They said he could have stayed in Barragem da Bravura,” a source told the Mirror.
“My friends and I don’t remember Christian hanging out, but he was quite reserved.”
Notes left at the resort in Praia da Luz a year later and sent to a Dutch newspaper are said to identify the vast area of water as McCann’s “final resting place.”
A local who has lived by the reservoir for more than 30 years told the Mirror that several Germans lived in motorhomes in the area during the 2000s.
It is understood that the police searched the area for only two hours before continuing.
The news of a new witness comes as Portuguese police fear that Brueckner will never be convicted of his alleged crimes against McCann.
Brueckner is currently in jail for drug offenses and is appealing a 7-year sentence for raping a 73-year-old woman.
Sources told the Sun that while police are working around the clock, the leads have dried up in recent weeks.
“They know [he] I will never speak. So it will be up to them to find the missing pieces of the puzzle to lead them to finally discover what happened to Maddie. “
In the early days of the publication of Brueckner’s name, the police were inundated with hundreds of new leads each week.
Now they don’t get any.
Portuguese detectives are eager to work alongside German authorities, believing they can help catch Brueckner.
But communication has been cut off between the two forces, leaving the Portuguese fearful that Brueckner will not face retaliation.
The relationship between the two forces has been cold after the Portuguese named Maddie’s parents Kate and Gerry became suspicious in the case of the clumsy detective Goncalo Amaral.
He then claimed that Brueckner, the main suspect in the German police, was a “scapegoat.”
