A 13-year-old boy is one of the fatal victims of the wildfire ravaging the state of Oregon in the US
Wyatt Tofte’s son was found inside a car by authorities in Marion County, where the body of his grandmother Peggy Mosso, 71, was also found.
Wyatt’s dog, Duke, was found dead in the boy’s lap.
Relatives told KOIN 6 News in Oregon that Wyatt’s father had left the house to try to find a generator because the power had been cut earlier. He was not there when the fire reached his house and surrounded it.
Wyatt’s mom, Angie, helped her elderly mom into the car as she recovered from a broken leg. When they got to the car, the tires were burned.
“The flames were all around him and around the car,” Wyatt’s great-aunt Mary Tofte told the local television station.
Meanwhile, Wyatt’s father Chris was desperately trying to return home to rescue his family, seeing the fire heading their way.
He passed some barricades driving frantically home and saw a badly burned woman crawling over the gutter. He stopped to try to help her, but told her that he could not delay as he needed to try to reach his family.
As she helped the woman into her car, telling her that she had to go save her son and wife, the woman whispered that she was his wife.
He drove to a checkpoint and left his wife with paramedics and then drove home to find his son. However, it was too late.
Authorities and family believe the 13-year-old boy tried to drive the car to save himself, his grandmother and his dog Duke.
He managed to get down the road, but then they found the car on the side of the road. Authorities believe the hot asphalt burned the tires and the car ended up trapped in hell.
A GoFundMe page has been created to help Wyatt’s mother, Angie, recover. She suffered critical burns while escaping the fire.
